The drilling fluids shale shaker is the first stage solids control equipment in the drilling mud system,which removes cuttings with diameter above 75μm from the drilling fluids brought up from the wells.The shale shaker, in various forums has played a prominent role in solids control systems for several decades. The two main shale shakers utilized in the utility industry are: balanced elliptical motion shaker and linear motion shale shaker.

Drilling mud desander and desilter are combined as drilling mud cleaner. After treated by shale shaker, drilling mud is feeded in to desander by centrifugal pump. The main parts of 1 set desander are the hydrocyclones. Desander cone could separate the solid particles with size of 45 microns. desilter cones separate the particles of 16 microns.

Drilling mud decanter centrifuge is used in separating suspension of solid phase with particle diameter ≥ 2μ m for drilling mud system. In an addition to shakers and hydrocyclones, the use of a high-speed centrifuge has significantly contributed to the ability of a drilling operation to reduce the amount of mud to be built and diesel/barite additions to maintain optimum low and high gravity solids proportions.

When air enters into the drilling fluids, vacuum degasser is used to separate the air. If no air in the drilling fluids, the vacuum degasser would used as a mud agitator.

All drilling mud solids control equipments are mounted on the top of the mud tank. After separating the solids, the cleaned drilling fluid would be pumped into the borehole again.

Mud pump in drilling mud system include centrifugal pump,shear pump,submersible slurry sump and screw pump.Centrifugal pump used as feeding pump for desander, desilter, or used as mixing pump for jet mud mixer. Shear Pump is mainly used for a quick concoction of high-performance mud so that the time spent on it will be greatly shortened and economic benefits of drilling increased. Screw pump used to feed drilling fluids for decanter centrifuge.Submersible slurry sumpused to to perform pumping of thick oil, oil residue, dirty oil, mud, mortar, running sand and other liquids from the municipal sewerage.

Drilling fluid and drilling mud solids control equipment maintenance cost can decrease greatly when proper solids control practices are utilized. From a fluid control stand point it would be desirable in most cases to remove all drilled solids. Although this is possible, it would be cost prohibitive. The goal of a solids control system is to achieve the balance between mechanical solids separation and dilution that will result in drill solids being maintained at an acceptable level with a minimum of cost.
